  • Overview

    This position represents an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated scientist to be involved in the research and development of novel protein digestion techniques as well as the automation and streamlining of peptide-level protein analysis. This individual’s efforts will be of impact to a wide range of different scientists, from those expressing biopharmaceuticals under continuous manufacturing conditions to clinicians looking to make more informed decisions about personalized medicine. In this dynamic role, the candidate will become an integral part of an interdisciplinary R&D environment by taking on leadership roles in prototype evaluation, method development, and product commercialization. This position offers an excellent opportunity to grow professionally and scientifically as well as to work collaboratively with project team members from both materials science and marketing.

    Responsibilities

    • Research and develop novel sample preparation approaches for detecting, quantifying and characterizing biomolecules using improved strategies for protein digestion and peptide-level protein analysis.
    • Be a lead investigator for the evaluation of prototype consumables, including reagents, enzymes, sample preparation devices, and/or chromatographic columns.
    • Contribute to interdisciplinary research efforts by offering a detailed understanding of applications and method development. Provide feedback to other teams through hypothesis-driven proposals to improve upon state-of-the-art consumable technologies and assist engineering and material science groups on design of experiments and new prototypes.
    • Design and execute test strategies, prepare reports and provide internal presentations to summarize scientific findings.
    • Operate and maintain LC/LC-MS systems and general lab equipment while creating and maintaining records of test related activities.
    • Protect newly developed intellectual property by assisting in the preparation of invention disclosures and patent applications.
    • Lead and carry out product development activities to ensure that new products are appropriately designed for their intended use.
    • Work with marketing colleagues and other technical groups across Waters to define and successfully commercialize new products and to showcase them through publications and collaborations with thought leaders from academia and industry.
    • Attend and present at conferences and keep abreast of literature to support product commercialization, aid in customer education, and to be versed in current as well as emerging applications, methods and customer needs.

    Qualifications

    A successful candidate should have:

    • Degree in biochemistry, analytical chemistry or related discipline.
    • BS with 10+ years of experience, Master’s Degree with 5+ years of experience, or PhD with 0-3 years of experience in developing methods for the analysis of biomolecules.
    • Advanced degree preferred.
    • Inventiveness and a keen interest in science.
    • Experience in developing sample preparation techniques for assaying biomolecules, including protein digestion, automation, peptide mapping and peptide MS/MS.
    • Well developed oral and written communication skills.
    • Proven track record of analyzing ability and learning agility.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
    • Proficiency in various types of separation techniques for biomolecules, including RPLC, SEC, IEX, and/or HIC chromatography.
    • Proficiency in mass spectrometry of biomolecules, including peptides and proteins.
    • Experience in method development and troubleshooting.
    • Demonstrated ability to publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and to give presentations at leading conferences.  
    • An understanding of structural biology and enzymology is preferred.
