  • Overview

    The Separations Research group is a multi-disciplinary research organization developing micro-scale analytical systems. We are seeking a candidate to support scientists and engineers working to develop new technologies which will be used to create next generation scientific instrumentation.

    Responsibilities

    • Brainstorm solutions alongside engineers and scientists
    • Conceptualize, design, assemble, and test electro/mechanical prototypes to support technology development from concept through early development
    • Perform mechanical, fluid, thermal, and systems analyses to support new and existing designs
    • Responsible for detailed design and mechanical layout of components, subassemblies, and top level instruments
    • Conduct analysis and test of components, subassemblies, and instruments to verify design and specification goals
    • Lead in prototype build and early development activities.
    • Work independently or as part of a cross-functional team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with superiors, peers, suppliers and customers
    • Provide technical mentoring to mid and junior level Engineers
    • Prepare, drive and present prototype designs and drawing reviews

    Qualifications

    • BS in Mechanical Engineering required, MSME is preferred
    • Minimum of 10 years industry experience in design and analysis of precision mechanical/electromechanical assemblies from early prototypes to high volume production
    • Proficiency designing precision mechanical components and assemblies taking into consideration design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, interchangeability, ease of assembly, and cost
    • Proficiency using 3D parametric modeling software (preferably Solidworks or UGNX)
    • Proficiency conducting Finite Element Analysis (CFD, Fluent, and experience with ANSYS considered a plus)
    • Computer programming skills (Labview, C++, Python) preferred
    • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, solid and fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
    • Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14, 5M-1994 as well as industry drafting standards
    • Fluency in English - written and spoken
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to collaborate effectively within and outside of team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with superiors, peers, suppliers and customers
