    Waters is currently conducting a search for a Vice President of Research reporting to the Senior Vice President of Waters Global Products. This role will be the representative of technical innovation at Waters. The charter of the Waters Research organization is to develop next generation innovative Informatics-led liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) technologies.


    The role will engage with key internal and external stakeholders as a partner in the development of our technology strategy. The ideal candidate will have a disciplined commercial orientation and strong project management experience. S/he will lead a global organization of research professionals specializing in informatics, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.  This role will leverage existing expertise within the current team and harness the capabilities of the organization to create future value for Waters. A key component of the role will be understanding and managing risk in the research process to minimize risk to development initiatives.   S/he will recruit highly skilled scientific personnel, pursue an open and active intellectual environment, and forge a culture built on good scientific practices, effective teamwork, and impactful innovation. S/he will lead the research community in pursuit of optimized customer relationships by probing for a deep understanding of the scientific problem / commercial opportunity. This may include the development of early models for in-situ customer use and feedback.


    The position requires frequent interaction with the executive management team. In this role, the VP will be prepared to discuss future technology strategy, provide program updates, identify resource gaps, and offer project prioritization alternatives. S/he will also be responsible for leading the Waters Innovation Forum and mentoring the elite members of the Jim Waters Society. This role will also partner closely with the Corporate Development office to provide business and technology requirements to identify external opportunities.



    The ideal candidate will fill a visible, strategic, and high-impact leadership role within the organization.  He/she will have significant depth in technology and business domains and will have a proven track record of developing a strategic agenda, driving a research strategy and building a high performance team to deliver results which are consistent with business objectives. 


    The ideal candidate will function as a coach and mentor, and be able (and willing) to drill into technology and / or project problems, devise risk-mitigating solutions, and guide the project back on-course. 


    • Core research leadership and vision – project planning and prioritization, interface with product owners, product marketing and development
    • Influence and lead decision-making on the concept phase of the project management lifecycle, with an emphasis on commercialization opportunities
    • Lead the evolution of the research process to align with transformational innovation concepts
    • Energize the vision for digital transformation
    • Technology vision - engage with the Corporate Development organization to assess future technology opportunities and assist in make/buy decisions
    • Organizational leadership - lead an organization of scientists and researchers; represent Waters internally and externally; support diversity and STEM initiatives


    Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Lead a global Research team
    • Provide vision to develop and establish research operating policies and approaches
    • Identify emerging technologies to be assimilated, integrated, and introduced within the company.
    • Partner with Scientific Operations to review and approve collaborations and investments in research.
    • Attract, develop and train a strong Research organization in support of business objectives; drive a culture of performance and accountability within the organization.
    • Business value: Measure against revenue growth, cost reduction, and cost avoidance.
    • Maintain a dialogue with Waters' marketing organizations to adjust for market trends, customer needs and analytical challenges; look beyond the 3 year plan, developing scenarios that may impact the roadmap and / or suitability of Waters technologies
    • Oversee academic and industrial collaborations & pursue new partnerships in areas of strategic importance; establish a cooperative environment where scientists and engineers work side-by-side with external customers to meet pre-defined project goals
    • Expand intellectual property portfolio in core and adjacent technologies. With legal support, stay current with intellectual property environment and right-to-practice concerns across project technologies.
    • Build collaborative relationships with the global product development organization including LC, MS consumables and informatics. Pro-actively build process for accelerating products from research into development.
    • Provide leadership and strategic direction to a multi-disciplinary departmental group of senior managers, research scientists, engineers, and product validation personnel with special attention to continuous improvement of project workflow
    • Recruit new high performing managers, scientists and engineers who are prolific inventors, creative problem solvers, and talented empiricists
    • Define and participate in Corporate strategic planning, including new technologies, acquisitions and business development opportunities
    • Align research portfolio with business strategy.
    • Velocity & Quality of idea-to-offer cycle: with increasing change in business models and shifts in technology; speed becomes priority

    • 15 years + Research and/or Development executive leadership positions
    • Experience successfully leading multiple complex systems integrations projects.
    • Inspiring people leadership and ability to successfully plan, delegate and execute large, complex initiatives.
    • Excellent communications including presentation, verbal, written.
    • MS (Ph.D. preferred) in Physics, Analytical Chemistry, Engineering or a related field; MBA considered a plus
    • An ability to guide technology and project risk mitigation activities; maintains composure in stressful situations
    • A seasoned professional in the art of project management, and critical path determination
    • Comfortable presenting to employees, senior management and customers; strong written and oral communication skill, capable of explaining complex subject material in simple terms
    • A mentor, a teacher, and a team player who understands how to build and nurture a highly productive research organization while working collaboratively with marketing, manufacturing and service; practiced in the skill of negotiation
    • Organized and detail-oriented, brings a sense-of-urgency to advancing Waters science through invention and creative problem solving; a good eye for talent, recruits outstanding scientists and technology personnel
    • Knowledgeable in the creation of patents and managing an intellectual property portfolio; working with research scientists and patent lawyers, assist in prior art investigations, possible infringement concerns, and the development of a patent strategy for offensive and defensive positions
    • At ease in a lab environment, able to provide guidance to early product evaluation, experimental design, data interpretation and correlation with analytical models
    • Has demonstrated successful leadership in a research environment; a good communicator and driven by scientific curiosity; a proper balance of theory and practice is desired
    • Broad understanding of the principles of fluid modeling, thermodynamics, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, biochemistry with expertise in one or two of the above.
