Overview

This is a career level opportunity for a mechanical engineer in the R&D organization at TA Instruments – Waters LLC.  You will have a unique opportunity to impact a broad range of industries including Electric Cars, 3D Printing, Energy Storage and Batteries, Pharmaceutical, Polymers, etc. developing life changing and innovative products. 

 

You will design and develop new measurement technologies for material characterization working with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers. In this highly visible role you will research, develop, design, test, evaluate, and document mechanical components, subassemblies, and systems, applying principles and techniques of physics and mechanical engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical efforts to develop the next generation of thermal and rheology instruments for material characterization. 
  • Provide innovative solutions to technical problems involving the design and development of scientific instruments.
  • Conduct tests at component, subsystem, and system levels; analyze data to determine design feasibility and product performance.
  • Support team efforts to design sophisticated products using a strong systems mindset including hardware and software, leading closure of all technical gaps throughout ideation and development lifecycle.
  • Drive projects forward utilizing fast-prototyping and other iterative design methodologies, ensuring timelines and technical requirements are met.
  • Accelerate design cycles by identifying, engaging, and managing suppliers and external partners while closely collaborating with internal cross-functional teams.
  • Create and present project technical reports to peers and management.

Qualifications

Education:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years experience
  • MS related degree preffered

Experience:

  • Mechanical Engineering experience, particularly in mechanical systems design and development
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of engineering fundamentals, theories, concepts, and procedures in product development
  • Proven innovation experiences in Engineering R&D, Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science, Test & Analysis
  • Experience in new product design and development from concept generation through product launch
  • Design for Manufacturability and Serviceability
  • Experience producing engineering drawings and Bills of Materials
  • Strong cross-functional and cross-site collaboration experience
  • Relevant industry and product experiences are preferred
  • Intellectual property (IP) generation, technical publication, conference presentation, and industrial collaboration experiences are highly valued

 

 

Skills:

  • High competency in theoretical and applied thermal & fluid engineering, engineering mechanics, and materials science
  • High precision engineering design experience, preferred to have familiarity with thermal and rheological measurement instruments
  • Familiarity with dynamic measurement of temperature, force, and displacement using various types of sensors operating under a wide range of environmental conditions
  • Ability to build and test prototypes per design; plan and conduct experiments, analyze results to validate designs
  • Strong design experience, both component and assembly level, using SolidWorks
  • Ability to effectively use both internal and external resources for detailed design, fabrication, and integration
  • Experienced in using and utilizing computational modeling (FEA, CFD software) on new product concept development
  • Skilled at analytical problem solving.  Experience in Mathcad, MATLAB, Origin, and other commercial tools are preferred
  • Self-starter and results-oriented, able to meet objectives and timeline while applying sound problem solving and decision-making processes
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and work effectively in a fast-paced work environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
